Allow us to invite you to the 101st World Esperanto Congress, which takes place from the 23rd until the 30th of July 2016, in Nitra, Slovakia.
For the Slovak Republic, it is a great honour to be able to welcome, for the first time in its history, the most popular international Esperanto event with the longest tradition. In Nitra, the history of the second century of these world events will be written. Every year, one to three thousand Esperantists from more than 80 countries in the world participate in it. As part of the framework of the World Congress, expert conferences are also organised as well as the annual meetings of many specialised Esperanto organisations, which hundreds of participants visit.
The significance of this event is attested to by the fact that the President of Slovakia, Andrej Kiska, accepted the event under his auspices. The 101st World Esperanto Congress will be dedicated to the theme of “Social Justice – Linguistic Justice” and will be the largest international event during the first Presidency of Slovakia in the Council of the European Union.
Although no state currently recognises Esperanto as an official language, it is used by a community of more than two million speakers in more than 150 countries in the world. In Poland, it is on the list of immaterial cultural heritage. It has received international recognition, for example from two UNESCO resolutions and support from famous public figures. Currently, Esperanto is used in travelling, correspondence, international meetings and cultural exchanges, congresses, scientific discussions, in original and translated literature, theatre and cinema, music, print and internet media, radio and television broadcasts. Esperanto, during the 128 years of use since its birth, has proved that it is a living, modern and valuable language. It makes the learning of foreign languages easier and contributes to the support of multilingualism. At the same time, it is an instrument for equal rights and fair language communication for every citizen of the world. The Esperanto movement is opening up to the rest of the world and offers Esperanto as a tool for a fair and effective solution to language problems, in the European Union and in the world.
During the 101st Esperanto Congress in Nitra there will be four open specialised accompanying events: language-politics conference of V4+ countries with the theme of “Perspectives of language communication in the EU”, international enterprise and commercial forum “Invest in the heart of Europe – Invest in Slovakia”, inter-denominational meeting of representatives of several religions, the 20th International Medical Esperanto Congress with the theme of “Doctors and Globalisation: what kind of doctors are necessary in the new century?”. The event will occur under the protection of the high state representatives and the framework of the presidency of Slovakia in the Council of Europe.
